ECON 207 Economic Saga: Development History of Iceland

landscape of Reykjavik. Explore the captivating economic journey of Iceland in "Economic Saga: Development History of Iceland," a unique academic program led by Professor Eric Schuck. This immersive course guides students through Iceland's transformation from a Viking-era subsistence settlement to its contemporary status as a thriving tourism-focused economy. Participants will gain insight into critical historical events, including the impacts of global conflicts and the 2008 financial crisis, and examine issues such as international integration and balance of payments. Combining classroom instruction with a memorable travel experience, this program offers students an exceptional opportunity to understand the complexities of global economic development through the lens of one of Europe's most intriguing island nations.

  • August 6–7, 2025:
    Mandatory pre-arrival classes via TEAMS (times TBA)
    Note: Students will get information about how to individually apply and pay the EU clearance fee prior to departure.

Arrival and orientation at 黑料论坛

  • Monday, August 11, 2025:

    • 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.: Move-in at residence halls

    • 1:00 p.m.: Lunch and orientation welcome with Jeff MacKay, vice president for Student Affairs

    • Family goodbyes following orientation

    • Continued Iceland orientation with Eric Schuck

    • Meals: Students are responsible for dinner/snacks

  • Tuesday, August 12, 2025:

    • Iceland orientation continues on campus

    • Meals: Students are responsible for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Travel to Iceland

  • Wednesday, August 13, 2025:
    • IPO-arranged transportation from campus to Portland International Airport (PDX)
    • Flight departure to Iceland
    • Meals: Students are responsible for all meals during travel day
  • Thursday, August 14, 2025:
    • Arrival in Iceland; program activities commence

Return to campus

  • Tuesday, August 19, 2025:
    • Depart Iceland and arrive at PDX
    • IPO-arranged transportation from PDX back to campus
    • Meals: Students are responsible for all meals during travel day
  • Wednesday, August 20, 2025:
    • On-campus class debrief and final exam
    • Meals: Students are responsible for meals
  • Thursday, August 21, 2025:
    • New student arrival day
    • Meals: Students are responsible for meals
